General information

Lucha Castro is a lawyer and human rights defender from Chihuahua, Mexico.
She has dedicated her life to defending women who are victims of violence and to fighting impunity in one of the most dangerous regions of the country.
She founded the Center for Women's Human Rights (CEDEHM) and has worked on emblematic cases of femicide, enforced disappearances, and abuse of authority.
Her activism has exposed her to constant threats and danger, but her commitment to justice and truth has made her a key figure in denouncing structural and gender-based violence in northern Mexico.
For the past few years, she has lived in Barcelona, where she is undergoing treatment for cancer.

At a time when narco culture is trending in the audiovisual world, this project seeks to restore the title of heroine to someone who truly deserves it.

Director’s Note:

I met Lucha at an informal gathering after an event. They just told me she was an important activist, Mexican. And that she had only a short time left due to terminal cancer. The rest was all her.

Her gaze, her charm, carried a kind of earthly mystique, a rare kind of simplicity. Perhaps only attainable after a whole lifetime.

She wore the smile of someone who knows they will live forever. Someone who is more idea than the sum of their five senses. Someone who transcends their skin.

That day I went home and decided it was time to challenge those empty idols that keep cornering us.

Those legends adorned with egocentrism stare at us from bus stops, whisper in supermarket background music, reach us through the clothes we buy.

And I don’t judge them. I want to challenge them, but I don’t judge them. There’s a pop culture yet to be discovered. There are stars that shine with the light of struggle.

Those who tell only their own stories often have few worth telling. And those who carry stories worth telling rarely focus on making their narrative look pretty.

That’s why sitting down with Lucha, simulating a day with her, spending more than one or two days… sitting down to listen, to learn from her, to try and convey her essence, has become a quiet obsession.

That’s why artists are necessary.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

Our project has been self-managed from the very beginning.
We are a group of friends (professionals in the fields of communication and media) who share a common vision: the need to make human rights "trendy."

It’s been almost a year and a half since we embarked on this journey. All the resources have come from us, either from what we already had or by investing from our own pockets.

Now, we need one last push to make the project possible. The final days of shooting will require a bit more production effort, as they’re a bit more complex.

We’ll also need to bring in other external professionals, since there are certain technical aspects beyond our expertise. And we’ll need to pay them fairly for their work.

Why this is important

We are living in a critical moment for human rights.
Inequality is growing alongside the hate speech that sustains it. To stop this inhumane wave, we need uplifting, beautiful, and transcendent narratives.
It’s clear by now that simply portraying the horrors of the world is not enough—this is why we believe something more is needed.

Connecting with someone who has chosen to dedicate their life to human rights, from a place of intimacy, can create incredible connections.
Connections that inspire others to embrace their legacy.
Or, at the very least, to frame the story of someone who deserves it as truly heroic.

Our film is aimed at anyone who regularly watches documentaries, but we want to go one step further and reach a broader audience.
Ideally, we hope to bring it to a generalist television channel or streaming platform willing to tell this story.

Team and experience

We are a fairly large and international team, made up of people from different countries:

  • Daniel Matilla (Spain): Director and Producer
  • Javier Silva (Chile): Assistant Director and Assistant Producer
  • José Chica (Colombia): Director of Photography
  • Angelos Karakoulias (Greece): Sound
  • Juan Kubicki (Spain): Camera Operator and Assistant Director
  • Mauricio Ayora (Ecuador): Sound
  • Ana Sancho (Spain): Production Assistant
  • Martina Carniglia (Chile): Production (supporting from Italy)

All of us have solid experience, both on set and in areas related to our roles.

We are working with a minimal recording setup, and every time we film at Lucha’s home, she insists on feeding us delicious Mexican food.
But now, we need to shoot outdoors, which requires more preparation: renting equipment, hiring a vehicle, providing catering...

These are the final shooting days, and after that, we’ll also need resources for post-production: color grading, sound design, voiceovers, copyright clearances... and for distribution as well.
