The population of Africa has the highest levels of blindness from preventable causes in the world. Optometry is a healthcare profession involved in primary eye health care. In Africa, the presence of optometrists was nonexistent until just a decade ago.
In 2013 with the combined efforts of different public institutions and NGOs working under the umbrella of the "Mozambique Eye Care Project" led by the Brien Holden Vision Institute, the Agency for Cooperation of Ireland, Irish Aid and the Dublin Institute of Technology, the first Optometrists graduated from the University of Lurio in Mozambique. These professionals have a huge task on their hands as there is an important visual health need that has to be met.
The presentation "Ophthalmic presentation of diabetic patients in Mozambique", by Mamudo Aruna, has been selected as one of the 'best in Spanish' at the first World Congress of Optometry to be held in Medellin, Colombia, from the 14 to 16 August. It explains the relevance of chronic diseases in relation to visual health and the role of optometrists in this field.
The distance between Mozambique and Colombia is 12,100 kilometers. Or is a 15 hours flight. This project aims to cover the costs of travel and to support Mamudo so that he can have the opportunity to present his work at the congress.
Any proceeds that exceed the amount needed for the project will be used to develop educational activities for students of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lurio, Mozambique.
This project aims to cover the costs of registration, travel and support for Mamudo Aruna from Mozambique to Colombia, where he will present his work at the World Congress of Optometry in Medellin, Colombia in August 2015.
The Optometry course in Mozambique is now well-established and is being used as a reference for other optometry courses in Africa. Mamudo's work is an example of this. It is a significant achievement for both himself and for the optometry profession that his work has been accepted and selected for dissemination in an international forum like the World Congress of Optometry.
Even though Mamudo has the support of the University of Lúrio, given the costs that have to be covered, there are not enough institutional funds available.
Mamudo's presentation in an event like the World Congress of Optometry is very symbolic. It is the result of the collective efforts of teachers and institutions who have worked for the development of Optometry in Mozambique and Africa.
The Entretodos Foundation and the Global Health Vision platform, develop initiatives in the form of programs and development cooperation projects primarily in the areas of education and health for populations with limited access to resources.
Its objectives are:
Our experience in Mozambique has developed in the field of teaching and research at the University of Lurio and economic and technical support to the students in developing their research.
In collaboration with the University of Alicante, the University of Lurio, the Dublin Institute of Technology and the Brien Holden Vision Institute, and under the "Mozambique Eye Care Project", it has created a cooperation agreement to support teachers of the University of Lurio in its higher education training through postgraduate studies.
